Evaluating teacher’s own teaching is a way to identify the strong aspects of their practice, as well as their weaknesses. Studies have yielded few reports oriented specifically to the utilization of videotape recording for the self-improvement of teachers in the classroom.

Today’s micro-innovation describes an idea used by a headteacher, Mr.Sajid Hasan, to help his teachers to become more effective in their classrooms.

Problem statement
A number of Sajid’s colleagues in school are very committed teachers but have not benefitted from a lot of formal training.

Micro-innovation description
To support teachers to develop, Sajid records (films) teachers in their classroom and then asks them to self-review their performance. He then follows up with a discussion about how they can improve, providing an opportunity for the teacher to reflect and for him to give feedback and suggest strategies for improvement.

Why interesting
This micro-innovation recognises the fundamental importance of teachers talking to each other about teaching and being open to critiquing each other and themselves, in order to improve learning. It also creates a strong sense that teachers are working together for the benefit of all the students in the school, not just those in their own class.

Potential implementation challenges
There are cost implications in terms of the resources required to film teachers (although this could be circumnavigated to an extent by recording just audio, which may be cheaper to set up). Teachers would benefit most from this micro-innovation if there was a particular focus when watching or listening to each recorder lessons.

Impact so far (according to teacher)
Sajid reports that the teachers are enjoying the challenge and opportunity to become more effective and that their practice is improving as a result.
